Its about one of our client in Abu Dhabi city, we have exported 1 Ton Hot rolled bar he wanted to buy the Bar at low price. Thus brought Bar from China, but the bar failed the test Later he brought the Bar from India, but was duped by a dummy company. The customer was under heavy pressure from the end user. Applications

AISI 1015 carbon steel can be used in forged, cold-headed or cold-formed parts which are low strength with wear resistant and hard surfaces.

AISI 1020 Low Carbon/Low Tensile Steel

AISI 1020 is a low hardenability and low tensile carbon steel with Brinell hardness of 119 – 235 and tensile strength of 410-790 MPa. It has high machinability, high strength, high ductility and good weldability. It is normally used in turned and polished or cold drawn condition. Due to its low carbon content, it is resistant to induction hardening or flame hardening. Due to lack of alloying elements, it will not respond to nitriding. However, carburization is possible in order to obtain case hardness more than Rc65 for smaller sections that reduces with an increase in section size. Core strength will remain as it has been supplied for all the sections. Alternatively, carbon nitriding can be performed, offering certain benefits over standard carburizing.

AISI 1020 steel can be largely utilized in all industrial sectors in order to enhance weldability or machinability properties. It is used in a variety of applications due to its cold drawn or turned and polished finish property.

Machining

In the cold drawn or turned and polished condition, AISI 1020 steel has high machinability. As per recommendations of machine manufacturers, AISI 1020 steel can be used for drilling, turning, milling and tapping operations using suitable feeds, tool type and speeds.

Weldability

AISI 1020 can be welded by performing the most common welding processes. In the cold drawn or turned and polished condition, it has better weldability. It has been suggested that the welding process should not be performed in heat treated or carburized condition.

Heat Treatment

Annealing

AISI 1020 steel is heated at 870°C – 910°C followed by holding for certain time until the temperature remains constant all over the section. It is then cooled in a furnace.

Carburizing

AISI 1020 is heated to between 880°C – 920°C in a suitable carburizing atmosphere followed by holding for sufficient amount of time to produce the needed carbon content and case depth. After this, refining/hardening and tempering processes are carried out to optimize the core and case properties.

Core Refining

AISI 1020 steel is slowly cooled and re-heated at 870°C – 900°C followed by holding until the temperature remains constant all over the section and quenching in water, oil or brine.

Case Hardening

After performing the core refining process, it is re-heated to 760°C – 780°C followed by holding until the temperature is consistent all over the section. It is then quenched in water.

Tempering

AISI 1020 steel is re-heated at 150°C – 200°C followed by holding for certain time until the temperature remains constant throughout the section. It is soaked for 1 hour per 25 mm of section and then cooled under normal atmosphere. By performing the tempering process, the toughness of the case will be improved and grinding cracks will be reduced.

Normalizing

AISI 1020 steel is heated at 890°C – 940°C followed by holding until the temperature remains constant throughout the section. It is soaked for 10 – 15 minutes and then cooled in still air.

Stress Relieving

AISI 1020 steel is heated to 650°C – 700°C followed by holding until the temperature remains constant all over the section and soaking for 1 hour per 25 mm of section. It is then cooled in still air.

Applications

AISI 1020 steel is used in case hardened condition. The applications of AISI 1020 steel are:

AISI 1022 Low Carbon Steel

Hot rolled AISI 1022 steel is a low hardenability carbon steel with low tensile strength ranging between 360-560 MPa. AISI 1022 low carbon steel has Brinell hardness ranging between 100 – 170 and it is mostly supplied in the black hot rolled condition. Compared to AISI 1020 steel, AISI 1022 steel has a higher content of manganese and carbon.

AISI 1022 steel is usually used in the rolled condition. AISI 1022 can be carburized achieving case hardness more than Rc65 with smaller sections. The case hardness reduces with an increase in section size. Hot rolled AISI 1022 low carbon steel has excellent machinability and ductility with reasonable strength.

Machining

The machinability of AISI 1022 low carbon steel is graded at 70% against the 100% machinability of the standard AISI 1112 steel. In the black hot rolled supplied condition AISI 1022 steel’s machinability is a bit lower than the machinability of M1020 bright steel. The softness of the hot rolled structure causes it to wrap around the cutting tool and resulting in a less clean cut.

Weldability

AISI 1022 steel can be readily welded by all standard welding methods. Pre-heating and post-heating processes are recommended for heavy sections of AISI 1022 steel.

Heat Treatment

Suitable heat treatment for AISI 1022 low carbon steel consists of the following processes:

  • Hot Working
  • Forging
  • Hardening
  • Tempering
  • Ageing
  • Annealing

Cold Working

  • Conventional methods are used in the cold working process for AISI 1022 steel. An anneal may be needed after severe cold working.

Hot Working

  • AISI 1022 steel requires 482.2°C -93.3 °C (900°F to 200°F) for the hot working process.

Forging

  • AISI 1022 steel is forged at 1288 °C-982°C (2350°F to 1800°F). The steel is heated to a maximum of 1100°C to 1200°C, held till the temperature is uniform throughout the section and forging is commenced. Forging below 900°C is not recommended. Finished forgings may be air cooled.

Hardening

  • AISI 1022 steel is hardened by quenching, tempering and heat treatment. It can also be hardened by the cold working process.

Tempering

  • Based on the required strength level AISI 1022 steel can be tempered after the heat treatment and quenching process at 316°C-593°C (600°F to 1100 F).

Aging

  • This is not applicable for AISI 1022 steel.

Annealing

  • A stress relief anneal on AISI 1022 steel is performed at 538 °C (1000°F) and a full anneal is performed at 927 °C (1700°F) with slow furnace cooling.

Applications of AISI 1022 Steel

The applications of AISI 1022 steel include:

  • It is used by industry sectors for carburized parts that are lightly stressed and for welding applications.
  • It is used for structural applications with moderate strength such as bolts and cold formed fasteners.

Forming

AISI 1118 carbon steel can be formed using conventional techniques.

Welding

AISI 1118 carbon steel has good welding property. It is recommended that free machining steels should not be welded because gases produced from the sulfur content can result in unsound welds.

Heat Treatment

AISI 1118 carbon steel can be heat treated at 844°C (1550°F) followed by quenching in water and tempering.

Cold Working

AISI 1118 carbon steel is limited to clod working. It is recommended that severe cold working process such as swaging or cold heading are not performed because the steel can be crumbled due to the presence of sulfur.

Annealing

AISI 1118 carbon steel is annealed at 872°C (1600°F) following by slowly cooling in the furnace. Stress relief annealing process can also be performed at 538°C (1000°F).
